Pow Sing Restaurant (Serangoon Garden Way)

Our Review On Pow Sing Restaurant

Pow Sing Restaurant at Serangoon Garden Way

We had our lunch over at the Pow Sing Restaurant located at Serangoon Garden Way, after our Sunday Hot Yoga Session over at Ki Yoga. It was around 1pm and the restaurant was near to full capacity. We were lucky to get a small table for two near to the cashier area.

What We Ordered

After sitting down, one waitress quickly passed us a thick menu and she went away to attend to other guests who were asking for services.

There were many items on the menu and we did not have a chance to take photos of the menu. We had thought that we could find a copy of the menu on their website but seemed like their online menu pages had not been updated with the latest items. If you like, you can check them out here.

We went through the menu and decided to order:

  • Roasted Chicken, Char Siew & Roast Pork Rice ($7)
  • Old Cucumber Soup ($5)
  • Seafood Crispy Noodles ($6.80)
  • Iced Barley with Lime ($2.50)
  • Iced Ying Yang ($2.80)

We initially thought that they would be slow to attend to us when the restaurant was crowded but we were very wrong! We had just raised our hand and one of their waitress was already next to us and all ready to take our order. Our orders were taken and there was only a short wait (really like less than 10 minutes) and our items were served.

The Taste

— Seafood Crispy Noodles

Seafood Crispy Noodle from Pow Sing Restaurant

For $6.80, we thought that the serving size was value for money. This dish was served really hot and we nearly burnt our tongue on our first bite.

The crispy noodle tasted very much like those any other crispy noodles but the watery and eggy gravy gave it a little savoury, salty and starchy taste. The gravy did get hardened as it cooled so we had to eat this dish while it was still hot.

We also liked that it came with plenty of greens. Prawns were small and not many but very tenderly chewy which we liked. Squids were prepared in a thin and long manner and were nearly mistaken like mushrooms. We quite liked the fish slices which broke apart easily. Overall, we liked the Seafood Crispy Noodle dish but the gravy did make us a bit thirsty despite we had the Soup dish.

— Old Cucumber Soup

For $5, we also felt that we got value for this dish. The soup was also served pipingly hot which we were lucky to have taken small sips from start. It came with many old cucumber slices and many small chunks of boneless pork and both were easy to chew apart.

Soup was very flavourful which could be due to their long boiling and the taste of ingredients got infused with the soup. If you like lotus seeds, the soup came with lots of it.

— Roasted Chicken, Char Siew and Roast Pork Rice

It was only this dish we found that it was not that valued for money in terms of serving size.

The Roast Chicken, Char Siew and Roast Pork were all thinly sliced so it was hard to identify any unique taste from the meats.

We did enjoy the rice which tasted like authentic chicken rice (read online that Pow Sing was supposed to be famous for its chicken rice). The rice could be eaten on its own and still tasted nice.

We also liked that Dark Soy Sauce and the Chilli Sauce. These two went well with the meats and rice. The spiciness of the chilli was also at the enjoyable level.

— Iced Barley With Lime & Iced Yuan Yang

For the Iced Barley with Lime, the Lime taste was stronger than the Barley Taste whereas for the Iced Yuan Yang, we had wished that we could go for the No Sugar option.

Payment

After finishing the items, we made payment over at the cashier counter which was just next to our table. They do have the Service Charge of 10% and GST of 7% which are additional charges on top of the prices.
