Our Review on Rakuya

Latest Update (12/03/2023): Rakuya has relocated to a new location – 25 Mohamed Sultan Rd Singapore 238969 thus we have made some updates to some of the content here. They are also one of the three Licensed Restaurants in Singapore to serve Japan Imported Kobe Beef.

We visited Rakuya, located along East Coast Road and near to Parkway Parade, on a Sunday afternoon with reservations made a few days earlier to try out their Omakase Lunch Menu.

Rakuya Lunch Omakase Menu

We tried their Hoshi (Star) Omakase Meal at $128 per person. This price excluded Service Charge of 10% and GST of 7%. If you are not into Omakase, they do have other Menu Items and Set Lunches worth trying.

The Hoshi Star Omakase Lunch Set included Appetiser, Premium Sashimi, Chawanmushi, Hot Dish, Sushi (5 Pieces), Ikura Toro Uni Rice, Soup and lastly Dessert. Their concept was that we would not know what will be served for each item and we just needed to sit back and enjoy.

Appetiser From Rakuya

The above image was the two items for the Appetiser. Do pardon us as the staff did tell us what each item was but we could not really register it. It’s also high chances you may not get the same items as us when you try them out.

The food in the cup tasted like meat. The texture was rather tough but still quite tasty. The other dish was a jelly-like item with some meat infused in it. On top of it was some Roes which tasted salty but still nice.

Premium Sashimi came next shortly after we finished our Appetiser. The dish came with some nice dry-ice presentation as well. Thick smoke emitted from a bowl below a wide plate and greatly dissipated to review the sashimi pieces. Likewise, the staff shared with us what was presented but we were just too eager to take photo and eat.

We could identify Salmon, Otoro (Tuna Belly), Chu-Toro (Medium Fatty Tuna), Swordfish and Scallop. The sashimi pieces tasted very fresh and nice.

Chawanmushi from Rakuya

Next dish to be served was their own style of Chawanmushi. This staff highlighted that this dish was special and we listened attentively. The Chawanmushi came with Fish Roes and a chunk of Monkfish Liver. The eggy part was made from the broth cooked with the Monkfish. The Broth tasted thick, milky, aromatic and went well with the egg. It was our first time trying out Monkfish Liver and the taste was not overwhelming.

Crab Meat Soup from Rakuya

Next dish was the Hot Dish item and it was a bowl of Soup. The soup was really aromatic when it was served onto our table. The soup consisted of a Crab Pincher, Scallop, colorful Taro balls and Greens. The Crab Pincher was meant to be held by the fingers and the meat came off really easily. The soup also tasted flavourful with those small pieces of Taro balls. Scallop was really nice as well.

Sushi from Rakuya

The next item was the 5-Piece Sush which we, once again, did not register what the staff was sharing. We liked that the fish slices were larger and thicker than the rice. Those yellow sauce was surprisingly nice as well. At this point we were wondering if the flowers were meant to be eaten as well. If you have the similar presentation, please do share with us if you have tried.

Next up was the Ikura Toro Uni Rice and this dish was presented in the shape of a fish bowl and a wooden spoon. We forgot to share that we were not big fans of spring onions and these were mixed well with the Uni. Rice portion was manageable and the Uni was really nice as well. Only thing was the portion of Uni was really small and we had wished they had given a slightly bigger portion.

Soup from Rakuya

The second last dish from the course was a bowl of Miso Soup with Kelp, 3 Clams and tons of greens. Miso taste was so-so and we were sad that one of the clams had sand in it. There was also quite a lot of the spring onions and drinking around them was pretty tough.

Dessert Items from Rakuya

Last dish was Dessert which was a plate of 2 Fruits and a Jelly-wrapped Taro. Taste wise – pretty normal.

With this it also marked the end of our Omakase Lunch Experience at Rakuya. The experience was pretty good and we would say the first few main course items were pretty good but a bit of let-down for the soup and the so-so dessert.

Since the Omakase Menu changes most of the time, you may get a different kind of eating experience than us. Remember to book a reservation before heading down.
