Sushi Kanazawa (Sushi Buffet) – Orchard Road

About Sushi Kanazawa

Sushi Kanazawa

Sushi Kanazawa is located at International Building (right down the corner of Shaw House, Orchard Road) which serves ala carte Menu and Sushi Buffet. It is a small restaurant which can sit around maximum 10 customers at each time.

Our Review On Sushi Kanazawa

This was our second time eating at Sushi Kanazawa after more than 10 years and this time round it was before our staycation at the nearby Yotel Singapore. We were served by the same chef (should be Chef Henry). When we first went there, he was the only person serving us and this time round, he had a female assistant. Initially we thought it was full from the outside but was lucky enough to get the final two places at the end of the restaurant.

The setup of the place (still no change after so many years) is basically a long bar counter with ten high chairs and you get to face the chef and the assistant and be served by them directly as they prepare the food.

The very first encounter with the female assistant was quite hostile as she just asked us (in an unfriendly tone and with no smile) what we wanted to eat. Chef Henry was always putting on a smiling and friendly face. We decided to go ahead with the sushi buffet. Luckily the female assistant turned friendly after that.

The Sushi Buffet – The Appetizers

The appetizers from Sushi Kanazawa

The first few dishes that came were the appetizers to whet up our appetite like Radishes, Edamame, Tofu Soup, Seaweed and a small plate of Sashimi. One thing that we noticed was that the chef had been busy preparing food for other customers but yet he seemed to have very good sense of who already ate what.

There was no duplication unless you requested for it. The assistant asked a few of us if we wanted Chawanmushi and she got busy preparing them (we could hear her whipping up the eggs in the kitchen) after we said yes.

The Sushi Buffet – The Main Dishes

After that there was a bit of waiting time as the chef got busy with preparing the sushi pieces. Once the chef was done with the first piece, the subsequent pieces came quite fast. The taste of each piece of sushi was flavorful and each piece fits right into your mouth. During this time, the assistant was preparing the corn with a piece of butter on top and putting them into the oven. The assistant also became more cheerful at that point of time.

The chef was also observant (he never asked us anything) as he saw that one of us do not take the spring onions on some of the sushi and he removed that subsequently from the rest.

After the 18th piece, we could not go on. As you can see from the image above, most of the sushi buffet items come with rice and that can really fill you up real fast. As compared to the rest of the tables, we think we missed out one or two more sushi items (octopus and hand-roll).

And if you have cravings for any particular sushi, you can also inform the chef or just pick and choose from the menu. The menu will also let you know which of the items are free flow or limited.

Taste Wise

  • Sashimi tasted fresh and distinctive
  • Soup was clear and nice
  • The slices were quite thick and generous
  • Japanese sushi rice tasted authentic
  • The BBQ parts were nicely done too
  • We could really taste the Abalone and Scallops

Should You Go For The Sushi Buffet At Sushi Kanazawa?

If you can eat a lot of various sushi items (with rice), it would definitely be worth the price for their Sushi Buffet. Taste wise is authentic and freshly prepared by the chef and assistant. Presentation can be very simple.

And if you intend to go there regularly, you can also enjoy their Customer Loyalty Program (Complete 6 stamps and you will only pay $10 for your next buffet).

The restaurant can be fully packed so be sure to make a call first if you intend to go there in a small group. The setup of the place is quite compact so you may have to sit close with the rest of the customers. If you have been to the many sushi bars in Japan, do not expect the similar ambiance as there. It can be quite the local Singapore style.
