Our Review On Sando (Lorong Chuan)

We were at this New Tech Park for our Pilates Lesson on a Sunday afternoon and we came across this SANDO food outlet which was serving Japanese Sandwiches and Rice Bowl and the place was packed with customers – a good sign that this place was worth a try.
We went in to ask for a Table for 2. One of the staff was able to give us one at a corner and she highlighted that the waiting time for their SANDO sandwiches would take around 10 to 15 minutes of waiting time. And before we could give her a reaction, she backtracked her words which left us a bit confused.
Ambiance

The whole place looked cramped and they have many Tables for 2 like the above which was positioned close to each other. We could easily reach out to the next table and hold his/her hand.
They were also very quick at clearing the table and we managed to take the photo above before the next group of customers came in.

And on the left side they have this clear screen kitchen concept where we could see many of the staff (or chefs – many were young) preparing the food. There was this (SHOKUBUNS!) BREAD MAKING HERE written on the screen but nothing was on when we were there. Also note that the view would not be visible while sitting down.
We were given a Beeper with a QR Code on it and we were supposed to scan it to view the Menu online, submit our orders and make payment.
Menu & What We Ordered

So in their Menu, they have basically four main categories:
- All-Day Breakfast Sando – 2 Options – Tamago Sando ($12.80), Spam & Hash Sando ($13)
- Sando – 9 Options – Tonkatsu Sando ($15.30), Hoki Fish Sando ($15.80), Sando Chilli Cheese Burger ($15.30), Chicken Karaage Sando ($14)
- RiceBowl – 5 Options – Chicken Namban Ricebowl ($12.80), Chashu Ricebowl ($14.50), Tofu Katsu Oyakodon ($13.80)
- Small Plates – 8 Options – Chilli Cheese Fries ($12.80), Corn Fritters ($12.80), Cheese Tater Tots ($12.80), Baja Fish Bites ($12.80)
We ordered their Baja Fish Bites ($12.80) from their Small Plates Section and Chicken Kaarage Sando (with No Greens, No Onions, $14) from their Sando Section. We made our payment online with our Credit Card. Prices above include GST and there were no additional Service Charge.
Both items were served together and the waiting time took around 15 minutes. Initially when the beeper sounded, we wanted to stand up and look for the collection point, instead we were served.
The Taste
— Baja Fish Bites

The word ‘Baja Fish’ was interesting to us and so we googled it and this word basically meant that it was a form of preparing the fish by beer battering and deep frying them till they are crispy. This dish is popular in Mexico and is usually served as Tacos.
This dish came with a lot of greens and was served with Thai Chilli (or is it Jalapeno) and Mayonnaise sauce.

The outer layer was very crispy, not oily and fish meat was quite tender. Only thing was that the taste was rather salty. Both types of sauce were normal which added slight variation of taste to the fish bites.
— Chicken Karaage Sando

According to their menu, this dish was made up of Japanese Fried Chicken, Overeasy Egg, Coleslaw, Cheddar, Kanzuri Sauce and Lettuce.
So two new thing that we learned from this dish – An Over Easy Egg is simply a Sunny Side Up Egg that has been flipped over without breaking the yolk and still maintaining some level of runny-ness. As for Kanzuri Sauce, this is a type of chilli paste that is spicy, citrusy, and full of umami. Ingredients include Red Chilli Peppers, Yuzu Peel, Rice Koji and Salt.

One half of their Chicken Karaage Sando was enough to keep one full. Sauce was not spicy and was a mixture of different flavours – salty and sweet. The bread should be their Shokubuns which were made in-house. The bread was fluffy, soaked well with the sauce and a certain milky taste.
Egg was not totally runny and part of the yolk got stuck between our teeth.

Their cheddar was kind of hard and stiff.

The key ingredient of this dish should be their Chicken Karaage. We quite liked that the chicken was well fried and a nice tender taste. The outer layer was crunchy and tasted good with the sauce.
