Mezza9 – Classic Cheese Burger And Maine Lobster Bisque (Grand Hyatt Singapore)

Our Mezza9 Review

Mezza9

Mezza9 is an ‘atas’ (high class) restaurant within Grand Hyatt Singapore located at Scotts Road where you get to experience the concept of conscious eating, quality-driven sustainable ingredients and fresh organic produce for a wide range of menu items like Thai, Seafood, Sushi, Grill and Chinese.

We heard that the Plant-Based Meat Patty Burger was available at Mezza9 and so we decided to make a reservation during our staycation at Yotel Hotel Singapore to see what the craze was all about.

The restaurant was pretty dark when we entered. There were only very strong spotlights at each table, the open kitchen areas and the service counters.

Many of the customers were pretty well dressed as well (haha, we were just dressed in T-shirts, Jeans, Shoes and armed with an umbrella as it was raining heavy that day). It was a common sight to see customers at some of the tables drinking wine out of a tall glass. For a big restaurant with many customers, we were pretty impressed that the overall noise level was well maintained and the most we could hear and see were the tables next to us.

After settling down, we were presented with their Menu which had a lot of items to choose from and we gave up taking photos after a few pages. The menu had these interesting icons to help those who were conscious on how and what they were choosing to eat.

Mezza9 - Interesting Food Icons

Drinks wise, Mezza9 offers:

The Plant-Based Burger was in another menu and we chose their Classic Cheese Burger (another option was the Modern Asian Burger), their Maine Lobster Bisque from the Seafood section, Coffee and Avocado Smoothie.

Our Food

Classic Cheese Burger Set ($25)

Mezza9 - Classic Cheese Burger Set

This was our first time trying a plant-based meat patty so we tried the Classic Cheese Burger to see how it compared to McDonald’s Big Mac. Based on their menu, the Classic Cheese Burger was made up of the Beyond Burger® ‘meat’ patty, Brioche Bun, Vegan Cheddar, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickled Gherkin (Cucumber), Vegan Mayo and Mustard. The set included a side order and we chose the Sea Salt Crispy Organic Cauliflower.

Mezza9 - 'Meat' Patty

We took apart the Classic Cheese Burger and on our first bite of the ‘meat’ patty, the texture tasted rather similar to the one inside a Big Mac. The patty was rather thick and a bit dry. On subsequent bites, we could taste the presence of Tofu within. Overall, we thought that if this item was a long term item in the market, it could slowly replaced those real meat patty or confused our taste buds that we were not eating an actual meat patty.

Other than the meat patty, their cheese was also plant-based. Overall, the taste was tad sour and did not have that milky taste as compared to the cheese from a Big Mac. It could be a long time before this could replace real cheese.

For the Sea Salt Crispy Organic Cauliflower, the crunchiness was in the middle and the sea salt just made the bland taste of the cauliflower a little bit more salty for our taste buds.

  • Vegan Cheddar was just so so with a bit of sour taste as compared to the cheese from Big Mac
  • Crispy cauliflower wasn’t crunchy crispy but it was not entirely soft either
  • The sea salt just made the bland taste of the cauliflower a little salty to the taste buds

— Maine Lobster Bisque ($18)

Mezza9 - Maine Lobster Bisque

The Maine Lobster Bisque ($18) consisted of ingredients like corn bread croutons (rebaked seasoned bread cubes), tarragon (a kind of perennial herb) and cognac (we were not drunk after that).

As we took multiple sips of the soup, the taste got bitter and there was also a strong cognac after-taste so both of us had different views on this taste. But we both agreed that there were generous bits of lobster meat that came with the soup.

100% Certified Sustainable Regular Coffee ($5)

Mezza9 - Sustainable Regular Coffee

For this coffee, the taste was surprisingly good. It had a strong aroma, not too acidic and there was also a lingering smooth taste in the mouth. Most importantly, it came from a sustainable source (hopefully)!

Soy Milk, Apple and Avocado Smoothie ($9)

Mezza9 - Avocado Smoothie

This Soy Milk, Apple & Avocado Smoothie ($9) also included other ingredients like Banana, Celery, Kale and Ginger.

The texture was rather gao (thick) with a strong milky (more of avocado, followed by banana and then apple) taste. We could not really taste the Celery (which was a good thing) but once we got to the end of the drink, we tasted a tinge of spicy ginger. We should have given it a good stir before drinking but the taste could have been different…

Once we were done with our meals, we called for the Bill and they took a while to come to us. The above prices were before Service Charge and GST and we could make payment with a Credit Card.
