We chanced upon this Quaint little restaurant which is next to and owned by PS.Cafe during our 1-Day Stayaction at the nearby M Social Hotel.
We were there at around 1130am to a quite empty but were surprised to be informed that it was already fully booked (and their Opening Hours are 1130am to 10pm – people must be loving this place!). Luckily for us, they could arrange a table for us but we had to clear by 130pm. We accepted the arrangement and were led to our seat.
So it will be advisable to make a booking in advance if you are planning to visit this place or you have to see how lucky you are on that day.
The Decor
Restaurant was nicely decorated with plants, big lantern lights and pictures of cat silhouettes.
Each table was accompanied with a bag stool and the cutlery were given to us in a paper bag. We were also presented with their folded paper Lunch Menu which introduced their food concept. It says “Jypsy is our casual contemporary approach to Japanese cuisine, marrying traditional flavours with a nomadic island spirit”
We also noticed many boards around with chalk written items which were supposedly their specials of the day and these were not in the menu.
What We Ordered
Many items on the menu and on the boards so we took some time to choose. Eventually we went with:
- Kara-age Chirashi ($16)
- Wagyu Beef Dripping Fried Rice ($26)
- Iced Honey Milk Latte ($7.5)
- Sunrise Citrus (Their Special Drink of the Day)
- Custard Pie with Hokkaido Fresh Milk Ice Cream (Listed on their Board – $12)
How Did The Food Taste?
Iced Honey Milk Latte & Sunrise Citrus
The honey in the Coffee was really sweet and needed to be stirred well before drinking. Other than that the iced milk latte was pretty normal.
The Sunrise Citrus was their Special Drink of the Day and was recommended by the server. The bitter taste at the first sip reminds me of grapefruit. Subsequent sips was not so bitter.
Kara-age Chirashi
The chicken meat was served in generous portion with eggs, onions and spring onions. The rice was also a surprise as there was a sweet sour taste to it. We suspect that taste was vinegar and it even tasted good on its own. The eggs were runny and most of it were stuck to the onions. If you are a fan of onion and eggs, you will love it. A bowl of miso soup was supposed to come with it but was served when we were almost done. Soup was nice, thick and tasty.
Wagyu Beef Dripping Fried Rice
This dish came with around 6 slices of wagyu beef with bits mixed with the rice. Beef slices were pretty tough and not easy to tear apart so have to eat them whole. There was thin bits of fats so swallowing was a bit of challenge. We thought the rice tasted more special then the meat.
Custard Pie With Hokkaido Fresh Milk Ice Cream
This item was listed on one of the board near to the entrance. We liked the presentation of this item. Crust was thick and crunchy. Custard was milky and not so sweet. The custard filling was also thick and the top part looks slightly like the very popular burnt cheesecake. There were crusty crumbs dusting the sides of the ice cream which made the ice cream taste better. The ice cream was really milky and it did not melt as quickly as most ice creams at other places. They also gave us two different spoon sizes without telling us the proper way to use them.
A Little Note About Their Service
They seemed to be quite understaffed (2 staffs attending to 4 other tables including us) at the beginning but at around 12pm, everything was in full swing.
We were a little disappointed that we had to ask a few times for our ice water (which they acknowledged but still no signs of it). Our drinks were also served to the wrong table (we had to do a wink-wink to let them the drinks were ours).
We had a pleasant moment when they cleared our cutlery and plates right after we were done with the mains and did a wipe down before the dessert was served.
Payment could be made from our table and they were very prompt (hmmm…). The receipt also came with a QR for us to submit our feedback.
