Summary Of Our 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip
We just went on a 5D4N (December 13 – 17, 2017) trip to Seoul, South Korea where we got to enjoy the Cathay Pacific Flight Business Class experience, Minus Subzero Temperature but no sight of snow for most of our days there, eating Korean Street Food, shopping at Myeongdong where shops are on sale everyday and taking on the personal challenge of eating Live Wiggly Octopus at the Jagalchi Market, Busan.
If you are planning for a trip there as well and would like to get some ideas on what to do there, please continue to read on for our experiences and enjoy this article!
Our Flight Ticket & Experience – Cathay Pacific Business Class
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 1 eattravel seoul 04](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-04.png)
Our initial flight choices were Korean Air (Business Class – Direct Flight, Day Flight) or Singapore Airlines (Premium Economy – Direct Flight, Day Flight) around the price of range $5,000+ but with a bit of patience, luck and the use of flight sites like Skyscanner and Wego… we managed to find a better deal – Cathay Pacific (Business Class, Red-Eye Flight) at the price range of $3,000+ with layovers (around 50 minutes for the Depart Flight and 110 minutes for the Return Flight).
The Good:
- Choose to fly over the night – You save more and you can get a better Flight Class which gives you a better rest and a Full Next Day.
- Layovers give you some stretching space which we liked as compared to a direct flight.
- Lounge gave you some time away from the crowd and you get to enjoy some of the local delights.
- The Flight Experience is really good. You get to eat a lot – starting from a glass of wine followed by nuts and a drink choice, appetizer, main course, fruits and dessert. Just ask for more if you are still hungry!
- Layovers give you more shopping options.
The Bad:
- The layover of 50 minutes is very rushed. From the moment we depart we have to start finding our way to the connecting flight which was at some part of the airport terminal and start the check in process. We lost our way but managed to get back on track after we saw the rest of the group.
- The type of seats and comfort were not consistent. The first leg was a fully inclined (1-2-1 layout) followed by angled inclined (2-3-2 layout).
- If your layovers is long, you will have to go through the customs and be expected to go through a long wait if there are many passengers.
The Weather & What To Wear To Survive Winter Seoul
During our 5D4N (13 – 17 December) Winter Seoul Trip, the temperature ranges from the low of -10°C to a high of 4°C, with the lowest in the early morning, slowly rising in the afternoon and drops back in the evening. Throughout this time you will experience lots of strong wind. We only managed to see one or two snow flakes in one of the evening.
So what should you wear?
For Him:
- Winter Cap – This may not be necessary unless you still find yourself shivering even with all the winter clothes.
- Ear Mask – Same recommendation as the Winter Cap.
- Mask – A good chance that you will experience an uncontrollable nose leak so it is recommended.
- Gloves – Highly Recommended to get it. The cold winds will really give your fingers frost bites. Get those that are touch-sensitive for phones for map navigation and taking photos.
- Body Wear – Recommended to have three Layers for the Upper Body and Two Layers (inclusive of a pair of jeans) for the Lower Body.
- Foot – Be prepared to wear two pairs of socks and a pair of sport shoes. Loosen up your shoe laces as the two pairs of socks may give you some ankle abrasions and aches. Be alert when you walk and avoid stepping on those black ice on the ground.
For Her:
- Winter Cap – This was necessary as the tip of your ears may get frostbites.. Ladies may look quite cute in them. 😍
- Mask – A thick scarf can double up as a mask. That’s what most people do there.
- Gloves – Highly Recommended to get one that is wind proof or you may have to stick your hands in your pocket all the time. And you will suddenly realize nobody hold hands during winter… even in Korean drama.
- Body Wear – Recommended to have three Layers, thermal inner wear, long sleeves to keep warm and a wind proof down jacket. Two Layers for bottom, inner thermal wear and jeans. This will not only keep u warm, it will also prevent your skin from drying out.
- Foot – Floor can be slippery, so wear appropriate footwear.
Recommendations:
- You can get mostly all the items from Uniqlo like the Heattech Seamless T-Shirt (first layer), Ultra Warm Crew Neck Long Sleeve T-shirt (second layer), Ultra Warm Tights (Inner Wear), Ultra Light Down Seamless Parka (Outer Layer) & Heattech Lining Fleece Gloves.
- Do not get those 4,000 Won Gloves from those local store. You will have issues operating your smartphones and cameras. We bought one without trying if its really for touch screen, and ended up not being able to take photos when we feel like it.
Navigation Apps & What You Need To Take Note
Walking Directions
If you depend a lot on Google Maps, you need to take note that walking directions are not shown and even for a short distance trip, you are provided with either a Bus or Train Route. You will definitely need some skill levels of map reading and endurance to navigate yourself when the weather turns very cold. For Apple Maps, we can’t comment anything since we do not own an iPhone.
If you need walking directions and you can read some Korean characters, you can consider KakaoMap which is available for both Android and iOS. The app is slowly improving to include more English characters in the Map.
Attractions
Not all attractions are listed correctly on the Google Map. You may want to do your research and verification first before you head out or else time will be wasted. For example, our search for the Bukchon Hanok Village on the Google Map led us to two locations – one led us to the Seoul Museum of Chicken Art which is permanently closed.
How To Travel Around And Cheaply In Seoul
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 2 eattravel seoul 05](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-05.png)
Traveling around Seoul need not be expensive. There are a few options to consider:
- Mpass Tmoney: One of the best and cheap way to travel around Seoul. Just select the number of consecutive days you plan to travel, pay the deposit and the rate and you are all set to go! For example, our 5D4N trip includes a day trip to Busan on the second last day and the last day is our direct airport bus so we went with a 3-Day Pass at 30,500 Won (inclusive of the 4,500 Won Deposit). You can use the Mpass for all normal Bus and Train Rides capped at 20 rides per day. You can enquire, purchase and get refund for this Mpass at the Tourist Information Desk (Arrival Hall) near Gate 10.
- Tmoney Card: For less frequent traveling or with plans to travel around other places outside of Seoul, e.g. Busan, you will need this Tmoney Card which you can purchase directly from Vending Machines at any Train Station. You can use this card for any Buses and Trains or to make purchases. You will need to top-up when the value goes low. We used this to travel around Busan and each train ride is around 1,200 to 1,500 won so be prepared to top up regularly. Any unused amount can be refunded at specified counters (very troublesome) and you can still keep the card.
Our KTX Experience
If you are planning a day or few days trip to Busan, the best way (but more expensive) is to use the KTX. If your schedule is fixed, the best way to secure a seat is to book online. If your schedule is not fixed, you can try your luck at the counters when you reach Seoul Station on that day itself or preferably a few days beforehand.
For us…
We booked our KTX Train Ticket on the day itself and when we were there at around 8, all the economy tickets were sold out. So either we go with the later train ride, go with First Class Ticket or Standing Ticket for the earlier train ride. The Economy Ride is around 59,800 Won per person, the First Class Ride is nearly double whereas the Standing Ticket is much lesser. We went with the Standing Ticket option.
Our Standing Ticket Experience
For the Standing Ticket Option, you will need to stand between the carriages or at the front of each carriage where there is a small standing space. If you are early and fast enough, you can still get to sit on the two seats available between the carriages. So while you are standing, you will experience fellow passengers walking past you regularly for toilet breaks. For those fellow standing (but tired) passengers, there are those who are sneaky enough to sit at those empty seats before being chased by the Train Conductor or the passengers who had paid for the seats (but boarding at different stops).
Change Of Train Schedule
Due to our poor planning and the very cold weather, we had to bring our day trip to Busan to an early end. The good thing was that there is this option of allowing you to change for an earlier train trip at the ticketing counter, if available, at no additional charges.
Our Ride Back To Seoul
The 3-Hours Plus Ride back to Seoul and in the Economy Class was rather comfortable and throughout the ride you get to see passengers getting on and off the train.
Hotel Worth Considering And How To Get There – Aloft Seoul Myeongdong
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 3 eattravel seoul 01](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-01.png)
If you are going there as a couple, planning to shop, eat a lot around Myeongdong Street and travel on trains, you can consider staying at Aloft Seoul Myeongdong which you can find the Myeongdong Street & Station nearby. A 10-minutes walk from the Myeongdong Underground Shopping Center will bring you to the City Hall Station. Take one stop from there and you will reach Seoul Station and you can be on your way to take the KTX train to Busan.
You can also visit the 8-Storey Daiso Building and North Face Myeongdon Flagship Store (and its Whitelabel Collection) from one of the exits of the Myeongdong Station.
We stayed in: The Aloft Room booked via Agoda
How To Get There From Incheon Airport: Take Limousine Bus Service #6701 outside of Gate 10. Fare is around 16,000 KRW per person. There will be a nice gentleman standing there. Approach him, ask him if you are not too sure, pay the fare, get the receipt and wait for the departure time. The bus stop is opposite the hotel so you may have to use the underpass to reach the hotel (plan well if you are carrying lots of luggage).
We are provided with: Two bottled waters, Room Slippers, new set of Toothbrush and Paste, new set of bath and hand towels
What we like: There are bolsters! And there’s a water cooler along the corridor which can help you to save on buying bottled waters.
What we don’t like: There’s no shaver provided for the guys. And you get this static shock when you are about to press the lift.
Places To Visit & Eat In Seoul (& Get Away From The Cold)
Visit KAKAO FRIENDS Store (Hongdae Branch)
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 4 eattravel seoul 02](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-02.png)
KAKAO FRIENDS Store (Hongdae or Hongik University) is the second flagship store after the first in the Gangnam area and is a good place to hang around for an hour or so for you to take photos with the 8 characters and with over 1,500+ items (plushies, phone casing, pillows & so much more) for you to shop! You can check out their online store (click here – some items are available for overseas shipping) if you want to make a shopping list first before you head down. Can’t find what you want there? Don’t worry! There are many other pop-up stores around Seoul.
If you are tired, hungry or thirsty, you can also head up to the top level where there’s the Ryan Cafe and check out the food items shaped as the various characters. Check out the limited edition items on display if you like collecting them (be prepared to get extra luggage).
We bought a 45-cm Apeach Doll, Apeach Mobile Phone Casing (for her) and a Ryan Face Mask (for him).
Visit LINE FRIENDS Store (Myeongdong)
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 5 eattravel seoul 03](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-03.png)
If you like LINE FRIENDS a lot, you can have a good time shopping with the many pop-up stores located in Seoul. We visited the three-storey store at Myeongdong which you will find that giant Brown at the entrance and the long queue waiting to take photo(s) with him as well as the characters dressed up in different styles.
We did not manage to get anything but we did manage to get a limited edition T-money Transit card featuring Brown & Cony from the T-money Top-Up & Vending Machine located at the train stations.
You can also visit the Flagship Store & Cafe concept in Itaewon if you are looking for a wider range of items. Or you can check out their online store (click here – only local delivery) first for your shopping list.
10×10 (Ten by Ten) & Daiso Myeongdong
Visit the 10×10 store located in Daehak-ro or Daiso Myeongdong, a 8-story building if you like to shop for cute Korean stationery and household items. We went to both and our conclusion is that Daiso will have more (similar) things for you to buy and the overall prices are also cheaper as compared to 10×10.
For 10×10, we could not find most of their online items (visit here) in their physical store but it could be just that particular store in Daehak-ro. Nonetheless, you can still spend lots of time walking around Daehak-ro where you can find many eating outlets and small indie shops selling artsy stuff.
National Palace Museum Of Korea
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 6 eattravel seoul 13](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-13.png)
National Palace Museum Of Korea is a good place to learn about the history of the Joseon Dynasty (1392 – 1910). You can spend an hour at this place walking from one exhibition hall to another and looking at the different displays like Relics (and its close relationships to China and Japan), Royal Symbols (see many turtles) , Palace Architecture, King’s Meeting (all meetings involved many subjects), Costumes and the Rooms.
Most importantly… Many museums charge an admission fee to enter but not this one which is a good thing!
Eat At MiGaBon/味加本/미가본 & Sinseon Seolleongtang/神仙雪濃湯/신선설농탕
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 7 eattravel seoul 07](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-07.png)
We recommend two places for you to visit around the Myeongdong area if you are looking for really comfort food in the day or nourishing food to warm up before you face the cold day ahead – MiGaBon & Sinseon Seolleongtang! These two are located in the same building of which Sinseon Seolleongtang is the first level and MiGaBon is at the second level. If you see a queue right outside, that one is for the Sinseon Seolleongtang.
About MiGaBon Restaurant
This is where you can find really good Juk (죽) or Korean Porridge (wide selection), Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup with Sticky Rice) and Traditional Tea.
You can go with Mushroom and Beef Porridge which is a mix of Shiitake Mushroom and Minced Beef and goes well with the sesame seeds or the Samgyetang if you are not sure what to eat. For the Samgyetang, you can ask the staff for advice on how to eat, there seems to be an art in taking the whole chicken apart. Porridge starts from 7,000 won, Samgyetang at 13,000 won and Tea from 4,000 won.
There seem to be staffs there who can speak fluent Japanese and simple Mandarin. If you can speak either, you should be able to get something really sumptuous there.
This shop is opened daily from 8am to 9pm except on Lunar New Year’ Day and Korean Thanksgiving Day.
About Sinseon Seolleongtang Restaurant
Sinseon Seolleongtang Restaurant is popular for its Ox-Bone Broth Soup and have many branches located throughout Seoul. The popular one is located at Myeongdong which you can expect a fast moving (and grumpy looking staffs) queue almost everyday.
So what’s so special about Seolleongtang? It is made by simmering ox bones, intestines and shank for several hours until the broth becomes rich and creamy white and this restaurant prepares them with the freshest ingredients every day.
You can choose to eat with a bowl of rice or with Mandu (Dumplings). Kimchi and Pickled Radish, at the side of the table, go very well with the soup and rice. Utensils and Scissor are kept in a drawer in the outer side of the table in case you are wondering where the utensils are. If you are not into spring onions, be sure to inform them as they serve very fast. Too late to inform and you will have a hard time taking them out.
She: Personally I feel that the porridge here is more watery and not as flavorful as Migabon. For those who prefers stronger tastes, try mixing the kimchi in. You may find the porridge more crunchy and flavorful.
Hwa Tteok (Myeongdong)
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 8 eattravel seoul 08](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-08.png)
A good place to eat if you have strong cravings for Tteok-Bokki (Stir-fried Spicy Rice Cakes) and still have some space for thin crust pizza laded with melted cheese on top and salad spaghetti (this is a full set plus a choice of soda drink) is this Hwa Tteok Restaurant located at Myeongdong. Head up to Level 2 or 3 for the seats.
If you can’t understand Korean Menu, the other Language Options are Chinese and Japanese. The staffs do not really understand English so Pointing, Gestures, Google Translate App may come in handy. Do visit with an empty stomach because we don’t think it is really possible to finish everything in their set meal for two.
Taste Wise:
- The Tteok-Bokki gets really spicy but still tasty as you cook it.
- Pizza and Spaghetti are really good and tasty but if you eat them first, it will be a challenge to eat the rest of the Tteok-Bokki (the crust and the bread crumbs make you full real fast) – this is quite a common sight when we were there.
- Soda is bubbly good and it includes real fruits (e.g. grapes) at the bottom.
- The Tteok-Bokki pot also comes with Dumplings and Noodles.
Price starts from 29,800 won for the full set.
Myeongdong Kyoja (Main Branch)
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 9 eattravel seoul 09](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-09.png)
Another popular eating place is this Myeongdong Kyoja. Their menu is very simple, there are basically only four items you can choose from, one of which is you can go for its Steamed Mandu (dumpling). The rest are noodle dishes. Though its winter, you may still consider trying the cold noodles which taste very nice. To warm yourself from the freezing temperature, order Kalguksu (Soft Noodle in Thick Chicken Broth). The Broth can warm you up in the cold weather especially if you have leaking nose. The chicken with onions bits are tasty combination too but too bad they come in small quantity. The free flowing Kimchi is also very good and you can ask for more refill every time they walk past.
They serve very fast and they ask for payment once the food is delivered so get your cash ready. The main branch can get very crowded so you can check out their another branch which is in the Myeongdong area as well.
Shake Shack Dongdaemun
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 10 eattravel seoul 15](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-15.png)
If you have read about the long queues and how our PM Lee enjoys his Shake Shack Burger, here’s your chance to join in the crowd by visiting the Shake Shack Restaurant at the trendy Doota Mall (Dongdaemun). We tried the Chick’n Shack Set which consists of the Fifty/Fifty Drink and the Fries.
Overall we felt the taste was just so-so (similar to McDonald’s McChicken), and the fries were pretty soggy, not those crispy kind. Popular choices seemed to be the Frozen Custard, ShackBurger (Angus Beef) and ‘Shroom Burger (Mushroom).
SulBing Korean Dessert Cafe (Myeongdong)
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 11 eattravel seoul 10](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-10.png)
Winter times are also good time to eat Bingsu (Shaved Ice) and ice cream! They take longer to melt so the taste lasts longer too! And if you think you have tasted the best shaved ice in Singapore, wait till you try those from Sulbing Korean Dessert Cafe where you can try many of their creations which make it really hard for you to choose if you are just eating that once. Their shaven ice is very fine and melts almost instantly in your mouth. The lump of red bean also taste good. It is not those very sweet kind and you can almost see the crusts of the beans if you look carefully.
What we ate: Black Sesame Snowflakes Sherbet which is Black Sesame Sulbing with Injeolmi rice cake, sweet red bean and jujube chips.
They are almost everywhere in Seoul and you can check out their locations here if you intend to head over.
Street Food
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 12 eattravel seoul 12](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-12.png)
There are many street food to try when you are out walking in Seoul, like:
Delimanjoo – Small, Corn Shaped Cake that is filled with custard. Expect a long but fast moving queue for this and you can entertain yourself by looking at how these mini-cakes are being made on the spot. You can find one of such stall at Myeongdong Underground Shopping Center.
Banana Milk – You can find this at many of the convenience stores. This is the milk you can always see in Korean dramas, fans will definitely know about this milk. Try it to see if you will get addicted to it!
Instant Noodles – You can find many different variations (Spicy, Cold, Dry or Salty) of Instant Noodles at the convenience stores as well. There seem to be not much variety in the convenience stores, maybe due to the fact that the street food are much more worth your attention. However, if you like Korean instant noodles, you can visit the supermarkets at Lotte where you can definitely find something of your liking.
Cup Chicken (Yangnyeom Tongdak) – Fried Chicken that comes with Fried Grated Potatoes, Rice Cakes mixed with Korean-Style sauce. If you are at Ewha Womans University, find this middle-aged man along one of the street who is selling these Cup Chicken. His Chicken is slightly different from the rest and the pieces come with a little fat in them to give you that extra crispy bite.
Hotteak – Known as Korean Sweet Dessert Pancake. You can walk around to see many selling this with different fillings like honey, pork or cream cheese inside.
Tteok-bokki – Spicy Stir-Fried Rice Cakes. They can get really spicy as you eat and good for keeping you warm in the winter cold.
Baked Cheese Stick – Skewered sticks of rice cakes with alternating pieces of mozzarella cheese grilled. This is quite interesting as you will wonder why the cheese does not melt while its being cooked. It does taste good and is chewy when you bite on it.
Soft-Shell Clams – Chewy bites with sweet Broth (after boiling the clams in it) and come with special chili and soy sauce for you to go along with it.
Egg Bread – Small steamed bread with whole egg inside. Not very tasty on our first try.
Gimbap – Similar to Sushi Roll which is made from Steam White Rice, wrapped in Seaweed and various other ingredients. Usually come in bite-size and some stores allow you to combine different flavors in a single order.
Jajangmyeon – A Korean-Chinese Noodle dish with a kind of Salty Black Soybean Paste on it. There is a popular stall in Myeongdong so be sure to try it.
Korean Softserve – It’s popular because it’s 32cm tall and you can get different flavors too. Good thing about eating it in the Winter Cold is that it doesn’t melt easily. Goodbye to messiness!
Cafes – Layered Cafe , HOLLYS Coffee, Osulloc & A Twosome Place
To get your daily coffee or tea fix, there are many cafes you can visit:
Layered Cafe – This (only) cafe is located at the Bukchon area and here you can find many freshly baked cakes (you will see their chef coming out with trays every now and then) displayed nicely on a large table and five Oppas (in different styles) for you to admire as they get busy with taking orders, making your cup of coffee and cleaning up. The cakes are delicious and IG-worthy!
Osulloc Tea House – Tea is supposedly to be from Jeju and comes in many flavors. They provide tin cans where you can smell the tea and sampling of some flavors. They had also creatively made green tea paste out of their tea. It taste pretty good, somewhat like matcha chocolate. This cafe is available in many locations and you can taste their special tea drink, pastries and dessert recipes. You can also buy their Tea Bags as gifts.
HOLLYS Coffee Cafe & A Twosome Place Cafe – Similar concept like Starbucks and Coffee Bean where you can get your Coffee, Tea and Pastries fix.
Places To Consider Visiting (If You Have Nowhere Else To Go)
Bukchon Hanok Village
This is one of the many places where you can rent and wear the Hanbok, a Korean Traditional Clothing and roam the street of the Bukchon Hanok Village. The clothes do not really provide any warmth and you can basically see many wearing their winter jackets over their Hanboks. Other than the sights of old traditional residential buildings which are still occupied by the locals and you are expected to keep your volume down… there’s not much to expect here.
Royal Guard Changing Ceremonies At The Gyeongbokgung Palace
There are three different types of ceremonies to watch if you are planning to visit the Gyeongbokgung Palace which take around 10 to 20 minutes per session and at the 09:35, 11:00, 13:00 and 13:35 time period. You will get to see many Guards in their colorful traditional costume marching up and down, in various formations and the sounds from traditional musical instruments and drums. We saw the ceremony at 11:00 time slot which takes around 10 minutes and it’s a challenge to stay warm in the cold open space. You can also rent and wear the Hanboks at this area.
Places To Visit In Busan
Our Experience: Distance from one attraction to another takes an average of an hour to two to travel. Our last minute planning wasted most of our Day Trip. For example, our map gave us the wrong locations (it brought us to Seomyeon – one of their busy streets) for the Gamcheon Culture Village which wasted an hour of traveling on the train and relocating. We also mistook the Yongdusan Park where there is a small temple for the famous Yonggungsa Temple.
Our Suggestion: If you are planning to visit Busan, plan to stay there for at least one night. Plan your trip beforehand and try to visit the furthest first before slowly heading down to the rest and lastly the KTX station to travel back to Seoul.
Busan KTX Station
Here are some of the things you can do while you are at the Busan KTX Station:
Hwan Gong Fish Bakery – If you like fish cakes in various form, shapes and sizes… there is this Hwan Gong Fish Bakery shop where you can find long queues.
Level 2 Open Space – You can head up to Level 2 where there is a open space area, a doorway leading out and it’s near to the toilets, which allows you to take very nice panoramic photo of Busan especially in the late afternoon period.
Gamcheon Culture Village
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 14 eattravel seoul 14](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-14.png)
Gamcheon Culture Village is well known for its colorful clustered houses and we included this popular attraction as one of our visits in our One-Day Trip in Busan.
The journey to this place is not that straightforward. Once you are out of the train station, it is either you walk all the way up which consists of many steep and narrow roads and may take an hour or so or you take one of the two shuttle buses up which is considered the best option but you will need to hold on tight while standing especially if the bus is crowded – it will swing and toss you around!
Once you are off the bus, there is no clear sign where to enter the village. You will need to walk up another slope which points the direction to walk and after that to look for the sign that says GAMCHEON Culture Village (it will be on your right). You can look at the photos above.
Once you are in… the long walk begins (the village is actually very, very big) with many stops asking you to pay (to go in to take those clear and unobstructed photo shots, to admire at their creations or for food/drinks) or to join a long queue at certain hotspots just to take photos.
We could only manage to walk like 20% of the whole journey before we decided to make our way down (we don’t know where the end of the trails leads to) and to our next stop.
Jagalchi Market
![General Attractions For A 5D4N Winter Seoul Trip - Our Travel Experience 15 eattravel seoul 06](https://cdn.eattravelshiok.com/Seoul/eattravel-seoul-06.png)
If you like to eat very fresh seafood throughout the day (and night) or get drunk, enjoy the atmosphere of a seafood market or soaking in the sunset view over the port… Jagalchi Market is a must-visit!
Be there in the early morning and you may get to see fishermen’s boats docking and loading off their catches and in the afternoon, you will see the locals at the many stalls buying from the many catches of the day. Other stalls will be sorting out. Be there in the evening, the restaurants along with street will be opened and bustling with excitement.
Most seafood restaurants along the street will be closed but you can still head up to Level 2 where you get to see another set of crowds (locals and tourists) eating at the many seafood restaurants. You can also call for a Live Octopus dish if you are up for the challenge (watch our Live Octopus Wiggly Video on Instagram).
The Live Octopus Experience:
If you intend to wait for the tentacles to stop wiggling, they simply won’t. They may slow down but still resume once you touch them. There will be a short moment which the tentacle will stick to your lips or gums (where there is flesh) and you will feel their sucking power – this is where you will start to creep up! So the best way to enjoy them is to start biting the moment you put them into the mouth.
What We Ate For Lunch That Late Afternoon:
- Fresh Abalone Porridge (long preparation time & last to come but very tasty)
- Sashimi Plate (beware of tiny bones)
- Live Octopus (cook it with the porridge if you are scared)
- 2 Soda Waters
- Daikon (White Radish) Salad (Appetizers)
- Pajeon (Korean Chive Pancake with Octopus)
- Wide Varieties of Authentic Kimchi (Appetizers)
Out of these 7 items, the last three are complimentary. Korean restaurants are generally very generous with their Banchan (side dishes) so do not be pressured to finish everything up.
This brings us to the end of our 5D4N travel experience to Winter Seoul. We hope our sharing can provide you with some tips on how to prepare, what to eat and where to go!
