Dai-ichi Fishmart (East Coast Road)

Our Dai-ichi Fishmart Review

Dai-ichi Fishmart

Dai-ichi Fishmart is a Premium Japanese Dining Outlet, located at 66 East Coast Road, set out in a Izakaya environment and serves a good range of affordable (prices already included GST and no Service Charge) Japanese Cuisines (Nimono, Sushi, Nigiri, Gunkan, Maki, Temaki, Donburi, Yakimono, Agemono, Sashimi), Alcoholic Beers and Sake.

We visited them on a weekday evening around 6pm. The place was rather cozy, a little dim, with two seating areas – Open Space and Airconditioned. Area outside was small but already packed with a few tables of people drinking and eating and so we opted for a table inside and near to the Entrance.

Service was rather prompt after we had sat down. They passed us their menu and suggested to us to take a look at their display area for that day’s fresh ingredients.

What We Ordered

There were many items to choose on their menu and after a few rounds of flipping back and forth, we went with their Buta Kakuri ($10.80), Mekajiki ($14.73), Tobiko Gunkan ($4.80), Ika Shioyaki ($12.80), Spicy Tuna Maki ($9.80), Hot Green Tea ($1.20) and Cold Green Tea ($1.20).

The Taste

— Hot and Cold Green Tea ($1.20 Each)

This came shortly after we made our order. The green teas were Japanese Green Tea and they tasted pretty normal. The good part was that they were free flow for both the Hot and Cold. They were always filling up when we were almost done with drinks. This was definitely good service and value for money.

— Mekajiki ($14.73)

Daiichi 002

The Mekajiki (Swordfish) Sashimi came next with 7 nicely-arranged thick slices. We liked the thickness of it and the tenderness on the first bite. The meat was also really fresh and very addictive (we took a few bites just to enjoy a single slice). A very good and impressive start for our dinner at Dai-ichi Fishmart.

Tobiko Gunkan ($4.80)

Daiichi 003

The Tobiko Gunkan came next with 2 slices with a generous amount of Bright Fish Roe on each piece. We liked the crunchiness of the Fish Roe inside our mouth and we were even checking with each other if we were chewing too loud.

— Spicy Tuna Maki ($9.80)

Daiichi 005

The Spicy Tuna Maki came next with 8 pieces. On the top layer was the same crunchy Fish Roe that we tasted from the Tobiko Gunkan. The insides consisted of 2 pieces of fresh tuna chunks made to look like it’s a single big chunk, one fresh cucumber slice and a mixture of spicy sweet sauce. We were not sure what were those red stuffs/sticks, we ate but still couldn’t taste anything.

— Buta Kakuri ($10.80)

Daiichi 004

The Buta Kakuri came next with 3 glossy-looking pieces. We liked the fragrant smell and that the meat were well-soaked in the Braised Sauce. Each layer easily break apart and melted inside our mouth with no feeling of oiliness. Even the bones were cooked till very soft and we could easily chewed them up.

— Ika Shioyaki ($12.80)

Daiichi 006

The Ika Shioyaki was the last item to be served with 10 pieces of meat and two chopped up chunks of tentacles. Taste wise, we felt that the tentacles and the meat were cooked/grilled a bit too dry and tough but we liked that some pieces had this layer of skin that gave off a bit of burnt taste when chewed and the meat inside went well with the light soy sauce.
