Our Flavour Flings Review

Flavour Flings is a small halal-certified and reasonably priced western cafe located at Hougang Avenue 1 area and it is popular for introducing the first Salted Egg Croissant in Singapore and for including Raclette Cheese (melting cheese) to some of its dishes.
We drove there on a Sunday afternoon (Parking was free, woohoo!). When we approached it from the direction of a Kopitiam, the side decor looks abit run down. Interestingly, they had creatively used egg paper holders to decorate the side wall but too bad some fell off and made it looks… old… but once you are in, it’s actually quite a cozy place. There was no large crowd when we were there but we could constantly see small groups of customers coming in (a good sign that business is good).
Note: For payment, it is at the cashier counter and please remember to bring Cash or Nets. No payment by Credit Cards.
What We Ordered At The Flavour Flings?

This was their Mains Menu and quite a long list of items to choose from. Quite a few of the customers went for the Salted Egg Yolk Dirty Penny ($15.90) under the Egg Yolk Mains section but we decided to go with their Salted Egg Yolk Croissant ($6.90) under the For The Petite Mouth section and the Beef Steak & Raclette ($24.90) under the Available Only After 12.30pm section.
— Salted Egg Yolk Croissant ($6.90)

We ordered the Salted Egg Yolk Croissant as it was one of their popular items and we also wanted something light so that we could enjoy the Beef Steak & Raclette.
The moment that this dish was presented (less than 10 minutes after making the payment over at the cashier counter – pretty fast!), we instantly went ‘Waaaa….” over the strong salted egg yolk aroma as well the thick filling which flowed out when we cut the croissant apart. This thick filling also reminded us of 流沙包.
In terms of the taste, we would have preferred the salted egg yolk to go with a piece of bread as the egg yolk taste was competing with the croissant. But in terms of presentation, the croissant would have been a better choice to contain the salted egg yolk inside.
— Beef Steak & Raclette ($24.90)
We went with Medium doneness for our Beef Steak because it would not be on a Hot Plate. They brought out our steak first and we were told to wait for the Raclette cheese to come.
It was quite a sight (as what you may have seen on some Facebook Videos) to see one of their staffs bringing out that big chunk of cheese and scraping a molten lump onto the beef steak.

Both of us have different views on the choice of cheese. One of us thought that the cheese was like those bought off-the-shelf type while the other had a better appreciation – a lovely stinky cheese smell (aka ATAS cheese!).
One common view that we had was that the cheese hardened very fast before we could do any spreading. It just became a layer of melted harden cheese and the taste was not that strong. We also regretted the choice of medium done beef as it was too hard for our liking. Medium Rare would be a better choice as it could have been juicier and less tough. Potatoes and the vegetables were okay.
— Sea Salted Caramel Latte ($6.50) & Gunpowder Green Tea ($4)

We saw quite a few interesting items on their Drinks Menu and we went with the Sea Salted Caramel Latte ($6.50) and the Gunpowder Green Tea ($4).

This was our first time coming across a Sea Salted Caramel Latte and a little googling told us that adding a small pinch of sea salt to our cup of coffee could mellow down the bitter taste. The sea salted caramel latte tasted pretty normal (little caramel taste and a stronger milk taste).
We thought that the Gunpowder Green Tea had a very interesting name and this could easily attract any customer who is out for something interesting. Our disappointment came when the drink came in the form of a tea bag (Chine Gunpowder Tea Bag from DAMMANN). The taste was okay and we guessed that they added some sugar to it to enhance the taste.
