Gyu-Kaku (Chijmes)

Gyu-Kaku is a chain of Japanese Yakiniku (BBQ) restaurants that serve premium ‘Japanese Wagyu’ and many other quality food items at reasonable prices.

Our Review On Gyu-Kaku (Chijmes Outlet)

We visited the Gyu-Kaku (Chijmes Outlet) on a very rainy Tuesday afternoon during our Stayaction over at Grand Park City Hotel. The walk from the Hotel to this place took around 10 minutes.

Upon entering the place, the overall décor was woody and dimly lit. We approached the counter for a Table for 2 and for their 90-Minute Buffet Course and we were given a table in the middle of the walkway shortly after that.

GyuKaku Buffet Menu

We were presented with a Menu and the staff asked if we wanted the Japanese Wagyu ($86.80++ per pax) or the Australia Wagyu ($66.80++ per pax). The difference was $20.00++ per person and it took us a while to think so (the staff was still standing there and waiting) and eventually we went with the Japanese Wagyu option. Reason – the cost included the Australia Meat options and there was this FOMO feeling if we did not get to taste the meats from Japan.

GyuKaku Receipt and QR Code

The friendly staff took our first round of order (time-stamped to start the 90-minute countdown) and came back quickly with this receipt that had a QR Code. We had to scan this every time we needed to order.

GyuKaku Charcoal BBQ

Before the first round of meats arrived, one of their staffs came over and set up this already-burning Charcoal Pit as well as the air suction. Pretty impressive on the air suction feature which was quiet and did a good job in sucking in all the smoke as there was no smoky smell on our clothes when we left the place.

Gyu-Kaku Sauces

They also brought us these two sauces to go with everything that we would be eating. The right one tasted sweet and it should be their Ponzu with Grated Radish. The left one tasted like soy sauce but it should be their Garlic Chili Oil. We could be wrong on these. Note: you can find them under the Dipping Section.

Shortly after this, all the items that we ordered were served and each time we ordered, the serving time was really fast.

Some Of The Items That We Had Ordered…

Do pardon us as we ordered many items in one go and we could not identify everything that we had ordered with the images. Some of the images could be labeled wrongly as well.

The Tastes That We Could Remember…

The Gyu-Kaku Kimuchi (one of their bestsellers) is a Must-Try. We liked the sour and crunchy taste so much that we ordered this item a few rounds to eat on its own and with the cooked meat.

Drinking the Wakame Soup on a rainy day gave us a warm feeling. The soup had a strong sesame and peppery taste. The Wakame was also plentiful, thick and chewy. Only thing was that the soup came with a lot of garnishes.

Pork Belly (Miso), Aburi Squids and Aburi Prawns – these took a while to cook but the taste was normal. We think you can give these a miss.

King Harami was another meat that we liked. It had a very thick and tender texture and was juicy in the middle as we chew them up.

Teriyaki Chicken, Inoki Mushrooms and Scallop were also good. These items took a while to cook and the sauces (marinated for the chicken, butter and soy sauce for the Inoki Mushroom and Scallop) brought out the enjoyable tastes.

We liked that the Japanese Wagyu Nakaochi had this nice and chewy Tendon-Like taste.

We also liked the Kurobuta Jowl which had this smooth greasy taste. This was one of the meats that went well with the left sauce (Garlic Chili Oil).

Drinks and Dessert

For drinks, we went with their Hot and Iced Green Tea which had the authentic Japanese Green Tea taste. Both drinks were free flow and cost $1++ per person. Service was good for the drinks and the staffs were attentive enough to fill up whenever they peeped/saw that our drinks were almost gone.

Dessert was something that both of us did not know it was included in the Buffet Menu. We went with Matcha Ice Cream and the taste was really like they managed to freeze up a glass of Ice Milk Green Tea and turn it to Ice Cream. They have other flavors like Mango, Vanilla and Chocolate.

Was The Gyu-Kaku Japanese Buffet Menu Option Worth it?

This meal cost us around $200 plus after adding the local taxes and service charges. For a once-a-while indulgence and enjoying Japanese and Australia Wagyu as well as other Meats without limit, we would say it was pretty worth it.

Other plus points included cooking meat over charcoal but without having the smoke getting onto our clothes as well as prompt and good service from the staff.
