Our Review on Huang Chao Teochew Noodle House (i12 Katong Outlet)

Not too sure if this Huang Chao Teochew Noodle House is a newly opened food stall over at Malaysia Boleh! located at the basement level of i12 Katong, but there was a long queue that stretched out when we were there thinking to get some KL Hokkien Mee on a Sunday afternoon.

The Tom Yum Fried Fish Soup ($6.30) and the Signature Noodle ($6) on their brightly-lit signboard caught our eye and we changed our mind in eating the Hokkien Mee for that day and to join the queue for those two items.
We entered the queue at around 12.05 and it was till 12.30 that we finally get to see the cashier and make the order. They do have another menu included other items like Tom Yum (Sliced Fish Soup, Double Fish Soup & Seafood Soup and Fishball Soup. Add-ons include Fish, Noodles, Balls, Pork, Egg and Vegetables.

We made payment with our Credit Card and we were told to wait at another queue. By the time we got our food, it was around 12.50pm. There are no GST and Service Charge with Huang Chao Teochew Noodle House.
Our Observations…

The whole stall itself was rather big and they had like 5 staffs in it – three were behind moving things, replenishing sauces, chopping ingredients, one was at the Cashier Counter – collecting orders, payments and taking out ingredients into a small bowl so that the Cook knew what to prepare. Lastly, we have this one Guy who was doing all the cooking via the electric stove that cooks two servings.
Something we did not like was how he handled the cooking… soup splashed out from prepared items and the amount of ingredients in each bowl were not consistent and dependent on how much he could grab at each time. Maybe the one-man show for so many orders made him rushed through everything.
Not too sure if something could be done to the stall layout or business flow to reduce the work load on the cook and make him happier.
The Taste
— Tom Yum Fried Fish Soup

First impression was that this Tom Yum Fried Fish Soup looked different from the menu – long white bowl versus a round black bowl. No signs of big green vegetables. Serving size was just enough for one person. The Soup didn’t come with any Noodles or Rice, must go with Add-ons if want to.

The smell from the Tom Yum Soup was really fragrant though. So good that our next table neighbours commented that the soup seemed very tasty.
But taste wise, the taste of Tom Yum Soup was there but texture was more like a soup well-mixed with Tom Yum paste and not really that spicy. We did like the fish – nice texture but the fried skin was really detached from the meat. Skin was well-fried and the Tom Yum Soup added a sweet, sour and oily taste.
— Signature Noodle

For our second item, the Signature Noodle… We think it’s the best item to order to get a glimpse of the taste of most of the ingredients that Huang Chao Teochew Noodle House has to offer – Fishball, Meatball, Wanton, Pork Liver, Minced Pork, Sliced Pork, Egg and Soup.

Initially when we ordered this item, we were surprised when the counter staff asked what noodles we wanted and we were thinking – “isn’t this Signature Noodle, so shouldn’t you be using the Signature Noodle whichever that is?” Anyway, we just picked the Mee Kia (thin egg yellow noodle).
When we first had a mouth of noodle without mixing, the taste of vinegar was very strong. So, it’s recommended to give the bowl of noodles a VERY good mix so that the sauce, vinegar and chilli were well soaked with the noodle strand. Then, the noodles really tasted very nice.
Meatball and Fishball were normal and they came in a single piece so it’s hard to share. Pork Liver was thick, well-cooked and nice.

Soup was really very good with a strong taste of minced pork and the red dates made the taste sweeter. We would say the soup is a must-try. The egg that was part of the ingredients (no picture) was just well-cooked and part of the cooked yolk was on edge of plate. The way we saw the Cook broke and cooked the egg made us sad…
Wanton was just okay and the meat inside had no significant taste. The minced pork and sliced pork were both very nice and we couldn’t get enough of the taste and texture. So, they are definitely a must-try as well.
If you are keen to try them out, they have other outlets at Malaysia Boleh Jurong Point and Lau Pa Sat.
