Khao Thai Food (Bedok)

Our Khao Thai Food Review

We visited the Khao Thai Food outlet at The Bedok Marketplace for the first time on a Wednesday evening to satisfy our craving for some Tom Yum soup and Thai food and also after seeing the frequent crowds whenever we ate around there.

The outlet was one big kitchen and most of the people in there spoke to each other in Thai (we closed our eyes for a brief moment and imagined we were in Bangkok). They also had a corner beside the Cashier Counter where some local (and popular) Thai products were on sale.

There were two small group of customers in front of us that day and it took some time before it was our turn.

Khao Thai Food has a lot of food items in their menu and it also took us some time to go through and made our choices. You can check out their menu here.

We made our orders and paid via Grab Pay.

What We Ordered And The Taste

We ordered their Thai Ice Milk Tea ($2.50), Fried Glass Noodle (Tang Hoon) with Prawn (Small, $12), Tom Yum Soup with Chicken ($6) and Stir-Fried Kailan with Roasted Pork (Spicy, $10). It took some time in between for each dish to be served and we had to collect from the counter.

— Thai Ice Milk Tea

The Thai Ice Milk Tea came first and the first impression was it had a strong taste of Bandung (evaporated milk or condensed milk flavoured with rose syrup) but in this case without the rose syrup and a slight tinge of Thai Milk Tea taste.

We did not know that the dishes would be served late so by that time, the ice had melted. So it would be best to order the drinks after eating.

— Tom Yum Soup with Chicken

The Tom Yum Soup with Chicken was served next and together with the Stir Fried Kailan with Roasted Pork.

The soup looked bright red and appetizing. We were happy that there was no layer of oil on top but sadly it still came with the unwanted ingredients like chilli, parsley and leeks which we had to take out in between the scoops.

The soup was cooked with coconut milk, it was not that sour but overall it was nice. It came with thick mushroom slices that tasted like abalones. For the chicken, we found many thick and tender pieces and amongst them were smaller pieces with rubbery thick skin which were tastier. We had to scoop around the soup several times in hopes that we did not miss them among the leeks and parsley.

— Stir-Fried Kailan with Roasted Pork

This Stir-Fried Kailan with Roasted Pork tasted just so-so. A bit too oily or too starchy. We had hopes that the roasted pork skin was crispy but was too soft. Other than the Kailan, there were thin carrot slices as well. This dish was also supposed to be spicy but only thing that was spicy was the mashed chilli slices.

— Fried Glass Noodle (Tang Hoon) With Prawn (Small)

This Fried Glass Noodle (Tang Hoon) With Prawn (Small) was served last and long after we were done with the Tom Yum Soup, Kailan and Milk Tea. We had to check with them to ensure that they never forgot this order.

For a small size, there was a lot of Glass Noodle and it came with a lot of sliced onions, garlics, black pepper and ginger. Overall, it had a peppery, hot and a tangy taste. It also came with 3 big prawns that were partly shelled and we just had to use a fork to peel the shell (easily) out around the meat.

This was one of their popular dishes which we saw many customers ordering it.
