Meat Market – Wood Grilled Meats (Hougang 1) (Closed)

Note: Meat Market has closed down!

About Meat Market

Singaporeans love their meat and that’s why you can find many restaurants which focus on meat dishes. One such restaurant is the Meat Market which opened not too long ago in the Hougang 1 Shopping mall (a neighborhood area) and offers meat grilled with a special type of wood every month.

Our Review On Meat Market & Our ‘Carnivore’ Order

We went there at around 2pm on a Sunday and there was no big crowd. Around three families there. The decor is based simply around wood and netting. Once we were in there, we start to smell a thin layer of smoke which is possibly from the Apple Wood (their wood of the month in April). Luckily the smell doesn’t stick onto us.

Once you are ready with your order, just head to the cashier next to the cashier, make your payment and wait to be served.

The Meat Market Menu

Meat Market offers a few meal options:

  • Build Your Own Platter which you choose what you want from the list of Base, Meat, Side and Sauce
  • Ala-Carte options like Salads (non-meat), Sandwiches, Pastas, Specials, Two- and Four-To-Share

Our Order

We initially wanted the Build Your Own option but the base was not within our taste buds (we forgot to ask if we can choose not to opt this out) so we just went ahead with the Carnivore Item (Chicken, Pork Collar, Sausage, Tenderloin at $29.90) under their Two-To-Share section.

Carnivore also comes with two sides and a sauce which you can choose from the Build Your Own Section and we chose the Truffle Fries, Grilled Pineapple and Honey Garlic sauce. Rice is complimentary and you can ask for more (free flow). Their plate and bowl are made of wood too!

The Food Taste

He: I like the brown-flavored coated rice. Well cooked, the flavor is unique and good (I should have asked what it was). The wooden bowl possibly brings out the taste of the rice too. One suggestion from me is not to finish the rice alone and at the first go. You may get full first before you get to enjoy the rest of the meat (this happened to me).

The Honey Garlic sauce is good and well-mixed too and goes well with rice, fries and meat. The grilled pineapple chunks are juicy too. Only thing is the black pepper on the truffle fries which get on my nerve sometimes when you bite into them and the truffle fries were a little bit soggy too.

The meat (Chicken, Pork Collar, Sausage, Tenderloin) taste good too. You can easily slice through the meat and the meat melts when they are in the mouth. You can find thin layer of fats on the Pork Collar, taste the redness (blood) of the Tenderloin and the crisp of the skin of the chicken.

She: I gave the rice a miss though rice looked quite good. The servers were nice enough to check if we wanted more rice. The sides were okay. Grilled pineapple was sweet and there were truffle smell in the fries. I think if those kind of chili sauce for western food were provided, they will really go well with the fries.

We requested for the beef to be medium done but as you can see it was quite rare in the middle. I had no issues with this as the meat was very tender. Not sure how the concept of smoking the meat was like but the smell of apple wood was in the air but can’t find any significance in the meat. My preference will be the beef among the different meats in this set.

Should You Try The Meat Market?

Yes! The food over at the Meat Market is reasonably priced and there seems to be even better prices for students on weekdays. Families that were there seemed to enjoy their meals too and clearing most of the items there.

The wait for food was not long and the servers (and possibly the restaurant owner) were very friendly and checked with each table about the food served.
