Our Teppei Japanese Restaurant Review

Teppei Japanese Restaurant is a good place in the Tanjong Pagar (Central Business District) to enjoy some of the best Japanese cuisines like Omakase Set Dinner (our main review) and Bara Chirashi Lunch Bowls. All of their cuisines are specially prepared by the restaurant’s skilled chefs using different and fresh ingredients and seasoning. Note that this restaurant has only 22 seats so be quick to make a reservation or be really patient to wait for empty slots.
Omakase was something that we wanted to try for a long while and we decided to try our luck with Teppei after numerous good reviews and also considering that the price of their Omakase Set Menu was slightly lower as compared to other similar restaurants.
We tried our luck on the 29 August and we managed to get 2 seats at the Teppei on 5 September, 6:30pm dinner slot.
Before our comments on the taste of food, if you are going for the Omakase Set Dinner, be prepared to eat food that you are not sure of it (look through the images and see how many can you identify but note that you may not get the same when you are there). You may have to ask the chefs what’s going to end up in your mouth for quite some items. Also, be prepared to be fed. The chefs will feed some of the items right into your mouth (that’s the entertainment part). It will also get pretty warm and smokey (your clothes will absorb most of it when you are out) when the chefs are preparing your mains.
The Omakase Dinner Set Items
Please note that what we had presented here may not be what you will be getting for your own Omakase Dinner at Teppei. Food items may be different but the overall experience should be the same.

The start of the Omakase Dinner experience and we were served this appetizer dish (Dish #1).

Followed by a small plate of Sashimi (Dish #2) which was made up of tasty Salmon, Maguro and some unknown fish types. Part of the eating experience was seeing how the chefs sliced up the sashimi and presenting them. Next up was a cup of Chawanmushi (Dish #3).

Next up was the Hand-Roll (Dish #4). The chefs prepared and served the ladies first followed by the rest of the guys. Size was also different and the guys got to eat a bigger hand-roll. The hand-roll consisted of mashed tuna and something crunchy. Next up was this item that looked like a stuffed date (Dish #5).

Dish #6 was a crusted shell item which we were not sure on what it was and how to eat them. The chef shared that we had to peel off the outer shell and eat off that small chunk of meat which tasted like Ge0-Duck. The taste could have been better with some shoyu sauce and wasabi.

Dish #7 was some cooked fish with a weird radish/ginger stick on top (no… we did not even try that) followed by Dish #8, a stick of fruit. Dish #9 was a mixed dish and followed by Dish #10, another stick of fruit. During this period, the chefs took efforts to engage with the diners and fed us directly.

Dish #11 was an art piece done by one of the chefs – a love-shape lined by their wagyu beef slices. We took a couple shot (using our phone) together with the beef plate. After which, they went to cook up the beef which was another showcase as we could see the beef slices catching fire on the stove. Sadly, the beef was slightly burnt and texture was a bit tough. Nonetheless, this was one of the better tasty items.

Dish #12 was another stick of fruit followed by a small bowl of crab leg soup (Dish #13). And another stick of fruit (Dish #14) after that.

It was near to 8:30pm and it also meant that we were near to the end of the omakase dining experience. The second last item we were given a choice and we went with these four spoons of assorted premium sashimi (Dish #15) which we were supposed to eat each of them in one mouth. Uni (sea urchin) was very fresh and we liked it a lot.

The last item was Wagyu Beef Fried Rice (Dish #16) and the beef was part of the love-shaped plate. We were very full by then but still managed to finish up this bowl. Taste was very nice.
Our first Omakase experience was very good. We left the restaurant with a very full tummy and our clothes with a strong smell of cooking.
