Our Review on Wild Coco (Boat Quay)

We chanced upon this Wild Coco when we were at the Clark Quay Area for our Pilates Lesson. It was a Sunday late morning and the place was quite packed with customers.
We looked at the menu and they were selling a wide variations of Nasi Lemak and Laksa (two of Singaporeś popular local dishes) at restaurant prices. We decided to give them a try.
We were given a table for 2 at the corner and were told to order from the QR Code.
The Menu

There were many items in their menu and more details about the dishes were in their online menu.
They have like:
- 12 variations of Nasi Lemak (e.g. Ayam Berempah Leg / Breast, Ayam Masak Merah, Chicken Curry, Fried Fish, Sambal Sotong, Basic, Meat Free, Kids)
- 9 Wok Dishes (e.g. Tempeh Tofu with Sambal Belado, Nyonya Assam Eggplant, Stir Fry Lady Finger / French Bean w Chye Poh)
- 22 Side Options (e.g. Naughty Calamari, Begadii, Samosa)

- 5 types of Nyonya Kuehs (e.g. Kueh Bingka, Kueh Salat)
- 23 Traditional Drinks (e.g. Kopi, White Coffee, Teh, Yuan Yang, Milo, Chrysanthemum, Puér)
What We Ordered
Initially we wanted to order the normal Nasi Lemak and Laksa but considering that these two are commonly found in many places, we decided to try something different and we ordered via their Online Menu:
- Ayam Masak Merah Set ($17.90)
- Seafood Laksa (with Thick Bee Hoon) ($18.90)
- Iced Yuan Yang (C & Kosong) ($4.20)
- Black Sesame Coco Shake ($9.90)
The Taste
— Ayam Masak Merah Set

This Ayam Masak Merah Set was served first and fast (literally like less than 10 mins of waiting) and this dish is made up of a serving of rice, a sunny side up, ikan billis, peanut, cucumber slices, a fried chicken thigh drenched with a good layer of Masak Merah (spicy tomato sauce), greens and onions. We would have wished that the sambal came free with it (it was available as a paid add-on option).

The Spicy Tomato Sauce tasted rather similar to the chilli crab sauce. The sauce was not very spicy, had a tinge of sweet and sourness as well as a slight crunchiness because of the onions. The sauce was also not the thick kind. We did break out a bit of sweat and we were not sure if it was due to us sitting at the corner or due to the sauce.

Egg was runny but a bit too oily to eat it on its own. The better option was to break apart the egg and eat with a scoop of rice.

We did like their Ikan bills which were not overly salty and very crunchy. The peanuts were crunchily good as well. Their version of the rice was rather crumpy and had a strong prononouced coconut taste with a hint of sweetness.

As for their chicken leg, the skin was a mix taste of crispiness and softness due to the masak merah sauce. We could still peel off a sizeable serving of the meat.
— Iced Yuan Yang

Our Iced Yuan Yang was served second. It was not a very big cup and by the time we finished most of our food, the taste was diluted but we could still get a good aromatic taste of the tea.
— Seafood Laksa

The Seafood Laksa was served next after the Iced Yuan Yang. This dish took some time to be served and by then, our Iced Yuan Yang was already showing signs of dilution. Other than that, we liked the presentation of the various ingredients. There were Tiger Prawns, Tau Pok, Scallop, Razor Clams, Fish Cakes, Laksa Leaves, Sambal Chilli, a good milky broth and our thick bee hoon hidden below.

Similar to the coconut-infused rice, the laksa broth was thick and heavily infused with a strong coconut taste. One thing that we found lacking in the broth was that there was no shrimp taste or that bit of umami flavour. It might have been better if we mixed the broth well with the sambal chilli.

The razor clam tasted normal. Fish Cake was those thick, smooth and tender kind which we liked. Their version of the Tau Pok was hard skinned and tasted a bit dry when we bit into it – definitely not like those kind that turned very soft after soaking them in the laksa broth and each bite would release the broth inside the mouth. For their scallop, we could taste that it was blanched first before adding it as a companion to the rest of the ingredients.

As for the Tiger Prawns, we could easily separate the head from the meat and sadly the meat was like soft and mushy (they could have been overcooked).
— Black Sesame Coco Shake

The Black Sesame Coco Shake was served last. It came with a Biscuit that we would usually eat during Chinese New Year and it was very sweet. The shake was smooth and had a thick coconut taste with a slight hint of black sesame. Very smooth.
Ambiance & Service

The whole place was spacious with many coconut tree drawings on the walls and the use of rattan chairs gave off a kind of Kampong vibe. Though we saw only three staffs (two handling all the servings and queries and one behind the drink counter), the services were good, attentive and prompt. Customers were also given a ‘bag caddy’ for their bags. This place was visited by many tourists as well.
Payments
Payment was done at the counter and the prices above were before the 10% Service Charge and 9% GST. We paid $61.03 in total for our meal with Shopback Pay and we can get 5% Cashback with our next visit.
